Un magnate d'industria multimilionario (Jack Nicholson) ed un umile meccanico (Morgan Freeman) si ritrovano a condividere il medesimo triste destino: entrambi si ritrovano ricoverati nella stessa stanza d'ospedale ammalati di cancro, entrambi sono malati terminali.
I due non si danno per vinti e, desiderando trascorrere al meglio il tempo che rimane loro da vivere, decidono di fare tutto ciò che non hanno mai potuto per motivi di tempo, per pigrizia o per mancanza di denaro.
Insieme decidono di imbarcarsi in una straordinaria avventura on the road lungo il viaggio della vita, diventando grandi amici e vivendo al massimo fantastiche imprese.
Continuando a depennare la lista delle esperienze da vivere, si paracadutano nell'immenso vuoto dei cieli, affrontano bizzarre corse automobilistiche e visitano straordinarie meraviglie come il Taj Mahal, scoprendo il Mondo e riscoprendo se stessi prima che sia troppo tardi...
